377th Air Base Wing, Munitions Squadron
Receives, stores, maintains, modifies and ships weapons and components to combat or storage organizations for the Department of Energy as well as the Air Force, Navy and Army.
- Absolutely critical to the nation's special weapons effort
- Operates the Kirtland Underground Munitions Maintenance and Storage Complex, the Department of Defense's most modern underground depot-level weapons storage facility
- Replaced the Manzano Storage Area in 1990
- Advanced computer-integrated system with redundant physical, magnetic and infrared sensors, self-contained power supply and underground fuel tanks
- Part of the 377th Air Base Wing, which operates the only two special weapons squadrons in the U.S. Air Force. Sister unit, 896th Munitions Squadron, at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.
- These units undergo regular inspections by agencies such as the Air Force Materiel Command and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency
